It's the question every business owner asks before investing in SEO, and it deserves a straight answer rather than "it depends" followed by silence.
So here's the straight answer from the source. In its own guidance on hiring an SEO, Google says that in most cases it takes four months to a year to put improvements in place and then start seeing the benefit.
That's a wide range. Where you land in it depends on a few things.
What decides how fast you'll see results
- Competition. Ranking for "physiotherapist in Kandivali" is a very different job from ranking for "home loans".
- Your starting point. A site with technical problems, thin pages and no reviews has more ground to cover than one that's mostly in good shape.
- Your website's age and history. Brand-new domains usually take longer to earn trust than established ones.
- How much useful content you publish. More helpful pages means more chances to rank.
- Consistency. SEO done for two months and then dropped rarely gets anywhere.
What progress usually looks like
Every site is different, but for a local business starting from a reasonable website, a typical pattern looks something like this:
Month 1: fixing the foundations
Technical fixes, page speed, setting up Google Search Console, optimising your Google Business Profile, and researching what your customers search for. You won't see much change in enquiries yet. That's normal.
Months 2 to 3: early signs
New and improved pages go live. In Search Console you start to see more impressions, meaning your pages are appearing in more searches, even if they're not near the top yet. Local map rankings can start improving, especially if you've been collecting reviews.
Months 4 to 6: real movement
Less competitive searches, particularly specific and local ones, start ranking on the first page. This is usually when enquiries from search begin to noticeably pick up.
Months 6 to 12: compounding
Rankings for tougher terms improve, older content gains strength, and traffic grows. This is where SEO starts paying off well, because unlike ads, you're not paying for every click.
Things that can show results sooner
- Completing and actively managing your Google Business Profile
- Fixing technical problems that were holding the site back, like pages accidentally hidden from Google
- Targeting specific, longer searches, such as "weekend yoga classes in Powai" rather than "yoga"
- Getting more reviews from real customers
Red flags when hiring someone for SEO
Be careful with anyone who:
- Guarantees a number one ranking. Nobody can promise that. Google itself warns against it.
- Promises results in days or weeks.
- Won't explain what they're doing and calls it a "secret method".
- Offers to build hundreds of backlinks for a low fixed price. This can get your site penalised.
- Doesn't send regular reports showing rankings, traffic and enquiries.
Need leads sooner? Run ads while SEO builds. Ads bring results quickly but stop when you stop paying. SEO is slower but keeps working. See Google Ads vs Meta Ads for where to start.
The bottom line
Expect early signs within a few months and meaningful results within six to twelve, with steady effort. If that sounds slow, remember that in a year's time you'll wish you'd started today. That's true of most things worth doing, and it's especially true of SEO.
