Mumbai is a city of neighbourhoods. People don't just search for "dentist". They search for "dentist in Borivali", "CA near Andheri station" or "best cake shop Thane". That's good news for small businesses, because you don't need to beat the whole city. You need to show up for the people near you who are looking right now.
That's what local SEO is about. Here's how it works, without the jargon.
How Google decides who shows up
For local searches, Google shows two kinds of results: the map listings (the "local pack") and the regular website results underneath. Google says its local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how close you are to the searcher, or to the location in their search.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, based on things like reviews, links and mentions across the web.
You can't change where you are. But you have a lot of control over relevance and prominence.
Eight steps to get started
1. Set up your Google Business Profile properly
This free listing is what appears on Google Maps and in the local pack. For many local businesses it brings in more calls than the website does. Fill in every section, choose the right categories and add real photos. We cover it step by step in our Google Business Profile guide.
2. Find the words your customers actually use
Think like a customer, not like your industry. You might say "orthodontic treatment", but people search "braces cost in Mumbai". A few free ways to find these phrases:
- Type your service into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions.
- Look at the "People also ask" box for common questions.
- Ask your staff what customers ask on the phone.
- Once your site is live, check Google Search Console to see what people searched before clicking.
3. Give each service its own page
One page that lists ten services won't rank well for any of them. A dedicated page for each main service, explaining what it is, who it's for, the price range and common questions, gives Google something specific to rank.
If you genuinely serve specific areas, you can create area pages too. Just make each one genuinely useful. Copying the same page fifty times and swapping the suburb name doesn't work, and Google is good at spotting it.
4. Get the on-page basics right
- Put the service and area in the page title, for example "Root Canal Treatment in Borivali West | Smile Dental".
- Use one clear main heading per page.
- Answer the questions customers ask, in plain language.
- Link between related pages on your site.
- Add your address and phone number in the footer of every page.
5. Keep your details consistent everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same way on your website, Google Business Profile and every directory listing. Small differences make it harder for Google to be sure all those mentions are you.
Useful places to be listed include Justdial and Sulekha, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, and directories for your industry, like Practo for doctors, IndiaMART for B2B suppliers, or property portals for real estate.
6. Get more reviews, and reply to them
Reviews influence both your rankings and whether people choose you. Ask every happy customer. Make it easy with a short link or a QR code at your counter. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and specifically.
7. Make sure your site works brilliantly on phones
Most local searches happen on mobile, often on the move. A slow, fiddly site sends people straight back to the search results and to your competitor. Our article on why websites are slow covers the common fixes.
8. Track what's working
Set up Google Search Console and check your Google Business Profile performance each month. And ask new customers how they found you. It's the simplest tracking tool there is.
Mistakes to avoid
- Stuffing keywords into your business name or pages. It reads badly and can get your profile suspended.
- Buying reviews or links. It's against Google's rules and it's risky.
- Using a virtual office or fake address for your profile.
- Expecting results next week. SEO builds over time. We explain realistic timelines in how long SEO takes to work.
Where to start this week: complete your Google Business Profile, ask five customers for a review, and make sure your phone number is the same everywhere it appears online.
