Most local businesses on Instagram fall into one of two camps. They post a festival greeting every few weeks and nothing else, or they post daily product photos that look exactly like everyone else's. Neither gets people talking.
The businesses that do well locally post things that feel human, useful or specific to the neighbourhood. Here are ten ideas to steal.
1. Show what happens behind the scenes
The bakery at 5 a.m. Packing orders. The clinic being sanitised before opening. People love seeing how things are made and done. It's also the easiest content to create, because you're already doing the work.
2. Before and after
If your work transforms something, show it. A haircut, a renovated kitchen, a cleaned sofa, a website redesign. Before-and-afters make the value of what you do obvious in two seconds. Always get permission when a customer is in the picture.
3. Answer one question per Reel
Take the questions customers ask you every week and answer each one in a short Reel. "How long does a root canal take?" "What should I bring to my first class?" Add captions, because a lot of people watch with the sound off.
4. Introduce your team
A short post about the people who'll actually serve customers builds trust before anyone walks in. Name, role, how long they've been with you, and one fun fact. Simple and surprisingly effective.
5. Share customer stories
A short video or quote from a happy customer, with their permission, is far more convincing than you saying you're great. Repost tagged stories from customers too, and thank them publicly.
6. Tie into local moments
Monsoon, Ganeshotsav, Navratri, exam season, the first day of school. Content that connects your business to what's happening in the city feels relevant instead of salesy. A monsoon shoe-care tip from a footwear shop beats another generic sale post.
7. Use Stories for polls and quick questions
"Which flavour should we add next?" "Morning or evening batch?" Polls and question stickers take seconds to answer, and they tell Instagram that people engage with your content. You'll also learn what your customers actually want.
8. Collaborate with nearby businesses
Team up with businesses that serve the same people but don't compete with you. A gym and a healthy cafe. A wedding photographer and a makeup artist. Run a joint giveaway or a collab post, and you'll both reach each other's followers.
9. Make offers with a real deadline
"10% off this weekend only" works better than an offer that never ends. Keep offers simple and make it clear how to claim them, whether that's a DM, a WhatsApp message or showing the post at the counter.
10. Teach something useful
Carousel posts with practical tips get saved and shared, which puts you in front of new people. A CA can explain three tax deadlines. A pet shop can cover summer care for dogs. Saves tell Instagram your content is worth showing to more people.
A few basics that make all of this work
- Fix your bio. Say what you do and where, add a link to your website, and make contact easy with a call, email or WhatsApp button.
- Tag your location on every post so people nearby can find you.
- Use Highlights for menus, price lists, reviews and FAQs.
- Reply to DMs quickly. A slow reply is often a lost customer.
- Speak the way your customers speak. If they talk in Hinglish or Marathi, it's fine for your captions to as well.
- Consistency beats volume. Three good posts a week, every week, beats a burst of daily posts that stops after a month.
